Last day in 5 Pointz is a series of artworks by Matthieu Martin that was born in a context of emergency… Everything started in New York in the night of November 19th; 2013 the date of the erasure of one of the most important places for the graffiti scene worldwide. That night a commando unit of a few men, equipped with a hose full of white paint, covered all the graffitis. Ordered by the new owner of the place, this gesture erased in one night thirty years of graffiti history on 20.000 square meters with countless layers of paintings.

Following this event, the artist decided to travel to New York, and decided to steal a few pieces of the wall — painting fragments composed by many stratums of color – as well as documents found on-site, like press articles (The New York Times — November 19th, 2013) and a few pictures lying on the floor. Arranged in four frames of several dimensions, that modest testimony is a memorial of a kind of Mecca for graffiti artists. “It’s for me a way to extend the history of the building. Beyond the graffitis’ erasure there is the loss of the architecture, not only the paintings, but also its frame. A place that could have become, if man had given it the time, a contemporary cave.
